VERBAL-Workshop 'Religion & Language / Religion & Sprache', 24-26
October 2010, Annual Conference of Austrian Linguistics (ÖLT), University
of Graz

This workshop will explore the role that language plays in shaping,
constructing and disseminating (conceptions of) religion and religiousness.
For this purpose, we invite contributions that examine

-different discourses by or on religions or religious groups and on
religious topics,
-different genres, including source texts, exegetic texts, prayers,
and (anti-)missionizing texts,
-from different social domains, including religious institutions and
their practices, the mass media, and science,
-viewed from internal or external perspectives, -drawing upon
different methodologies and approaches, ranging from
discourse analysis over comparative and contrastive synchronic or
diachronic analysis to homiletics and lexicology,
-focusing on a variety of topics, e.g. religious identities,
fundamentalisms, taboos, cultural struggles, etc.

There are no restrictions on the language or the semiotic mode of the
material to be analysed as we are looking for a wide range of different

The VERBAL-workshop 'Religion & Language' is the fourth in the series "'x]
& Language' initiated by Eva Lavric. It will be organized by Marietta
Calderón und Georg Marko. The workshop will be part of the official
programme of the Annual Conference of Austrian Linguistics (ÖLT) at the
University of Graz and will take place from 24-26 October 2010. The
conference fee for the ÖLT will probably be €20 euro.

Call for Papers

We would like to invite you to submit an abstract of no more than 300 words
to marietta.calderonsbg.ac.at and georg.markouni-graz.at by 5 July
2010. Individual presentations will be allocated 30 minutes (including 10
minutes for discussion). The workshop languages are English and German.
We are planning to publish a volume of the papers from the workshop.
