Meeting Description:

Linguistic diversity is an extraordinary asset that the public is not yet aware
of. A careful glance at the myth of Babel displays how the concept has
entwined itself and is perceived by public opinion as a sort of obstacle to
technical and scientific progress and administration of territories and
society, at a useless cost for the individual and the community.

Luckily this excessively over-simplistic vision is not the only one. In certain
cases linguistic diversity is, more or less coherently, tolerated or accepted in
the name of human rights. Elsewhere, it is associated with bio-diversity, in
this way generating curiosity and support from a greater public. In certain
cases, the preservation of linguistic diversity is viewed with even more
positivity and concreteness: like a shield against cultural and political
hegemonies, against linguistic and epistemological monolithism and with a
view to promote the subject's relational and interpretational capabilities.
The in-depth study and circulation of this second line of thought leads to a
leap in quality: from protection to promotion of linguistic diversity. This is
not anymore just about trying hard to conserve such a culture and heritage,
but more to do with counting on it in order to experiment new forms of
development and cohabitation.

Bearing the latter in mind, the fifth annual Days on Linguistic Rights,
focusing on 'multilingualism and the working arena', will be the stage for
discussions and debates about initiatives and business activities that have
come up as a result of the need to protect/promote linguistic diversity and
associated professional figures.

The event aims to attract specialist and non specialist (students, local
administrators, businessmen etc) publics to gather at a few conferences as
well as various thematic sessions and exhibition area for posters and stands
in order to inform and circulate, on a greater scale, the reasons and
dynamics of the most avant-garde and efficient activities in the field of
promoting linguistic diversity, in and outside university. The Conference
wishes to explore the resistance and the difficulties one meets in trying to
promote linguistic diversity and multilingualism. The approach shall be
interdisciplinary.

Based on the latter the following themes are to be discussed at the
conference (incomplete list):
- Multilingualism explained
- Linguistic diversity and globalization
- Multilingualism, relation networks, local development
- Multilingualism, economics and quality of life
- Linguistic diversity and governance of the local area
- Linguistic diversity along with scientific and technical innovation
- Jobs, operators and figures dealing with linguistic diversity
- Institutionalisation regarding the promotion of linguistic diversity in Italy,
Europe and the Mediterranean: associations, schools and local
