Want to learn a language in D.C….and for FREE?
August 31, 2010 by Ladan
I’ve always wanted to learn Farsi, and to be honest, it’s kind of sad
that I don’t know it already considering my background. But in my
defense, when you grow up in Indiana and only know about ten Persians
total in the area, it’s hard to get your practice in. Nevertheless,
I’m done making excuses and having my lack of language skills get in
the way of my job. If you want to go into any international business
(in my case, news), you have to know at least two languages.
Of course, many of us can’t afford expensive tutors or a Rosetta
Stone. I paid over $400 for mine and I find it difficult and confusing
(there are legit no English words on the entire system. how do I
really know what I’m saying? i could be saying run or jog and I’d have
no clue…). So I decided to look into some free language classes in the
area to give myself some forced exposure to the Persian language
outside of my extended family and coworkers at RFE/RL.
Starting this week, you can sign up for the Global Language Network
program and enroll in one of 40 of language classes that meet on
nights and or weekends usually once a week for an entire semester at
George Washington University. Here’s a complete list of classes
available (cough please don’t take mine! They don’t go first come
first serve–they tally up how many people register and go on a lottery
system). The courses require a small deposit fee which you’ll get back
at the end UNLESS you skip more than THREE classes in the semester.
The point is to make sure the people who sign up actually go and use
the spot to its fullest. A good deal in my book!
