Dear educators, mentors, and friends from my time at The University of
Pennsylvania,

I'm happy to announce that the book that I have co-authored with
Christine Mallinson of the University of Maryland Baltimore County,
Understanding English Language Variation in U.S. Schools, is
forthcoming from Teachers College Press in the Multicultural Education
Series and is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com:
http://amzn.to/ajx0om at the reasonable price of $29.95 for the
paperback edition. Bill Labov wrote the foreword, Walt Wolfram wrote
the afterword, and Deborah Tannen wrote an endorsement for the back
cover, so we’re especially happy to have so many excellent
sociolinguists support our efforts.

Our book tailors information about language variation to U.S.
educational contexts. We focus primarily on connections to K-12
education, but the material is also relevant to other education
professionals, including college/university instructors, school
counselors, speech-language hearing scientists, as well as parents and
anyone interested in learning more about language variation in diverse
school settings.

Drafts of our book have successfully been used in graduate and
undergraduate classes as diverse as: African American English,
American English, Dialectology, Assessment and Evaluation of Reading
and Language Development, Counselor Education for Diverse Populations,
Language Attitudes, Language in Diverse Schools and Communities,
Language in Society, and Language Variation and Education. I'm writing
to you early so that you have time to plan for spring classes; if you
need advance information or copies of the book, please let us know.

I’ve attached a book flyer that you may forward it to anyone you know
who may be interested. We also have a book website
http://charityhudleymallinson.com and a book facebook page
http://facebook.com/englishlanguagevariation, so we hope to see you
there as well. When the book is available, we’ll contact you again
with a formal press release and flyer that you may share. Thanks to
all who have supported us and helped me from my graduate school days
until now as you have all in one way or another helped me to get this
book to press.

Sincerely,

Anne H. Charity Hudley
