BOOK NOTICE
My book entitled FROM HINDI TO URDU: A Social and Political History has been published by the Oxford University Press, Karachi. This edition can be ordered from www.oup.pk and is for sale in all countries except India. The edition for sale only in India has been published by Orient Blackswan Publishers in Delhi.
The book is the first history about the names, age, theories of origin, identity and historiography of Urdu and how these are related to identity-formation and communal poliitcs in India. It also investigates the use of Urdu in education, the print media, films, radio and employment etc. These uses too are related to the politics of Hindu-Muslim identities in India and also present-day Pakistan.
