Provincial chiefs to supervise Implementation
National Language Policy
December 8, 2011, 9:39 pm
Minister of National Languages and Social Integration Vasudeva
Nanayakkara announced that steps would be taken to empower all local
government chiefs to oversee the proper implementation of the national
language policy within their districts.
Participating in a workshop at Ratnapura on language usage and the
execution of a national language policy in the local government
administration, the minister explained that Sri Lankans had to suffer
immensely because their lack of respect and recognition for each
other’s language, religion or race in comparison to other developing
countries. He noted the huge economical fallout due to that. He said
the president had put an end to the war and it was the collective
responsibility and duty of all to ensure that such a situation would
not recur hereafter.
The minister made it clear that it was necessary to properly execute
the language usage and national languages policy to ensure that all
races receive equal respect and equal opportunity to work as a Sri
Lankan within a unified country.
The minister said that any Sri Lankan should have the right to have
all his services carried out in one’s respective mother tongue at any
government office. He explained that it was their responsibility, as
representatives of the general public to create a positive environment
wherever there is a lack of necessary facilities and a suitable
environment.
