FG’s Irish language policy under scrutiny
One of the more controversial aspects of the Fine Gael manifesto is a
proposal to change the status of Irish in schools. It would no longer
be a compulsory subject. The debate over the future of the subject in
our schools in continuing with Fine Gael's proposals to make the
subject optional for Leaving Cert Students causing huge controversy.
Students at colleges we visited today have varying opinions on the
plan. Not everybody is against the plan.
But those working in the area say that a change is needed to make sure
the language is kept alive. The issue is expected to be a hot topic as
the first leaders debate "Tri Gaeilge" will take place tomorrow night
on TG4.
