Abstract:

This book contributes to our growing understanding of the nature and
development of language learner self-concept. It assesses the relevant
literature in the disciplines of psychology and applied linguistics
and describes in-depth, qualitative research examining the
self-concepts of tertiary-level EFL learners. Although researchers in
applied linguistics and SLA have recognized the importance of
self-constructs, there remains little empirical work in the context of
foreign language learning that focuses exclusively and at length on
this central psychological construct. The content of this monograph
draws on interdisciplinary sources, with input from psychology and
applied linguistics. It will appeal to students and researchers
interested in language-learner psychology as well as self-related
constructs in general. The text provides insights into how learners
view themselves, and how these self-beliefs can develop and affect the
progress of an individual's language learning.

China-sponsored language programs in U.S. raise concerns, hopes

Teaching Mandarin is a growing trend across schools in the United
States, where the number of students enrolling in Chinese language and
cultural programs has tripled in recent years.

A school district outside Columbus, Ohio, is on track to receive more
than $1 million in federal grant money for its Chinese arts and
language program. But what's really caught people's attention is the
$30,000 that the district is getting from the government of China.

Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education

Starting Where the Children Are is a collection of essays on Mother
Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTBMLE) on these general topics -
MTBMLE: What It Is and What It Is Not; Language in Education: Reform
and Reality; The International Experience in Language Use in
Education; Pinoy English; Language Endagerment and Preservation;
Languages and Identities; and Writing in the Mother Tongue. Edited by
Ricardo Ma. Duran Nolasco, Francisco Andes Datar, and Arnold Molina
Azurin, the essays are written by educators, media personalities,
linguists, and culture advocates. The book argues for the need to
shift from our present bilingual policy to mother-tongue based
instruction.
