SL, Canada sign MoU on implementing language policy

The National Languages and Social Integration Ministry signed a
memorandum of understanding with the Canadian government to mark the
implementation of a US$ 5.6 million project in support of Sri Lanka's
official languages policy.

National Language and Social Integration Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara
signed on behalf of the Sri Lankan government while Canadian High
Commissioner Bruce Levy signed on behalf of Canadian International
Cooperation Minister Beverly J Oda.

The signing took place at Canada House, Colombo.

This MoU is a result of a request by the Sri Lankan government from
the Canadian minister during his visit to Sri Lanka.

The Canadian International Development Agency will be supporting for
implementation of the National Languages Policy so that all Sri
Lankans can receive public services in their own language. The
programme designed to respond to the needs of enhancing ties between
Sinhala and Tamil communities.

The high commissioner said that the initiatives will directly and
benefit citizens of minority communities who have limited access to
services in their mothertongue.

"Special focus will be given to the Northern and Eastern Provinces,
and the estate sector. It will articulate comprehensive strategies to
mainstream gender equality and respect for cultural diversity," he
said.

Minister Nanayakkara said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa is keen on
implementing the languages policy so that no conflict will arise in
the country in the future.
