Introduction.

The European Language Council/Conseil européen pour les langues (ELC/CEL) is an
organisation of universities, other institutes of higher education and
professional associations.
Its aim is the quantitative and qualitative improvement of knowledge
of the languages and culture within the European Union and beyond (see
http://www.fu-berlin.de/elc). Its President is the dynamic Wolfgang
Mackiewicz from the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. This paper
describes some aspects of the association's recent activities with
special emphasis on European language policy, thematic network
projects and the ELC's contribution to teacher education. We refer to
the associations's website for other aspects of its activities.
