Former Waukeganite Reyna Hernandez, now of Highwood, has been named
Illinois State Board of Education assistant superintendent for the
Center for Language and Early Childhood Development.
Her role at ISBE is to work closely with divisions of Early Childhood
and English Language Learning to ensure that every Illinois student is
prepared for success.
“Reyna will help this agency move forward as it builds a
preschool-though-12th grade education reform strategy that ensures our
earliest learners and growing population of English language learners
get the best possible education to succeed in the classroom,” said
State Superintendent of Education Christopher Koch.
Hernandez has a background with immigration public policy and English
language learning. She grew up in Waukegan as an English language
learner herself.
She has a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University, a law degree from
New York University Law School and is fluent in French, Spanish and
English. She returned to work for her alma mater Waukegan Public
School District 60 after graduating from Harvard.
She was a community education parent facilitator for the district’s
parent information and support center for two years. She went on to
law school and then worked for Latino Policy Forum in Chicago.
Hernandez also worked as adjunct professor at DePaul University’s
College of Education where she designed and taught a course on
bilingual education law and policy.
“Working for Waukegan School District helped me define how I wanted to
have a broader impact moving forward. For me, that was law and
policy,” Hernandez said.
She called her employment with ISBE a “golden opportunity” to try to
impact both law and policy related to ELL.
