The new website for Terralingua's *Index of Linguistic Diversity*
(ILD)<http://e2ma.net/go/7195450753/208665123/224598733/1405789/goto:http://www.terralingua.org/linguisticdiversity>is
up and running! Make sure you visit the site to learn more about the
ILD
and read the latest about it.
The ILD is the first-ever quantitative measure of global trends in
linguistic diversity. It measures changes in the number of mother-tongue
speakers of a globally representative sample of the world’s languages. Its
objective is to provide solid data that show whether the world’s languages
(particularly indigenous languages) are losing speakers, and if so at what
pace. Click here to read

Terralingua’s new project * Voices of the
Earth<http://e2ma.net/go/7195450753/208665123/224598741/1405789/goto:http://www.terralingua.org/voicesoftheearth/>
* got officially started last June, and now has its own website! We invite
you to visit the site to find out what we are doing.
Voices of the Earth supports Indigenous Peoples’ efforts to document and
revitalize their oral traditions. Keeping oral traditions alive contributes
to strengthening indigenous identities and helps ensure that indigenous
worldviews, values, beliefs, knowledge, and practices are transmitted to the
younger generations. Gathering these traditions also enables indigenous
communities to record their historic presence on the land and their cultural
and spiritual connections with it. In many cases, this record can support
Indigenous Peoples’ attempts to uphold their rights when facing development
pressures that might radically alter their natural environments and their
ways of life. Click here to read more…

PROJECT<http://e2ma.net/go/7195450753/208665123/224598743/1405789/goto:http://www.terralingua.org/voicesoftheearth/saanich/>
*
As a part of our Voices of the Earth project, last June we finalized a
partnership with the *Saanich People* of southern Vancouver Island, British
Columbia, to support the initial stages of their project “Bringing our
Stories Back”.
The project goal is to create an archive of traditional stories about place
to be used for intergenerational transmission of the related teachings and
know-how and for the development of culturally relevant educational
curriculum. A group of highly motivated and dedicated Saanich Language
Apprentices has been at work on this project. Click here to read

VISIT WITH TSILHQOT’IN PEOPLE LAYS GROUND FOR ORAL LITERATURE
PROJECT<http://e2ma.net/go/7195450753/208665123/224598745/1405789/goto:http://www.terralingua.org/voicesoftheearth/tsilhqotin/>
*
Also last June, we laid the ground for another oral literature project
supported by Voices of the Earth. Terralingua Director Luisa Maffi traveled
to the interior of British Columbia to meet with the Tsilhqot’in People and
discuss opportunities for a partnership focusing on documentation of their
oral traditions. This partnership is currently being finalized.
The project will have a special focus on places of historic and spiritual
significance in the Tsilhqot’in traditional territory. Tsilhqot’in community
members who are committed to rekindle their language and culture will work
with their Elders to record historic narratives about the land and people’s
presence on and use of it, including traditional knowledge of foods and
medicines, traditional survival skills, sacred sites and ceremonies—all of
which are bound together in oral ways of thinking. The materials will be
used for language and culture revitalization efforts, educational
curriculum, and land title and rights cases. Click here to read more…

Over the past several months, we have been at work to develop an outline of
a curriculum module on biocultural diversity for high schools, as well as an
information package for teachers, which introduces the concepts and provides
guidance for integrating the module into natural and social sciences
courses. We are now getting ready to implement pilot projects with two
schools in the USA, and are exploring opportunities in Canada.
If you are interested in learning more, or would like to work with
Terralingua to implement this curriculum in your school, please contact
Terralingua Director Luisa
Maffi<maffi at terralingua.org?subject=Biocultural+Diversity+Education+Project>
.
Also, be on the lookout for an announcement about our new biocultural
diversity education website, coming soon!
