Overseas students flock to language school
Adam Daniel Breuer-Zehevi is always motivated to get to his Chinese
literature class on time.
"I have a business plan in Beijing, and Chinese language study is my
final preparation before I open my translation company next year," the
28-year-old said.
Wearing a red shirt and jeans, Breuer-Zehevi looks like a typical
foreign student at the School of Chinese Language and Literature under
Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU).

the last decade, U.S. spy agencies are still lacking in language
skills needed to talk to locals, translate intercepted intelligence

California English Proficiency Test 'Almost Guarantees' English
Learner Classification, Study Shows
Taking the California English Language Development Test "almost
guarantees" a student will be classified as an English learner, the
University of California, Berekely's Center for Latino Policy
Research, study reports. Just 12 percent of kindergarten students who
took the CELDT in the 2009-2010 school year were considered English
language proficient, misidentifying the many others as English
learners, according to the study.

The deaf need equal access to education, Kenya told
Kenya on Monday joined the rest of the world in marking the
International Deaf Awareness week with a special call to the
government to facilitate access to education by the deaf.
An official with the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights,
Bernard Mwongesa, urged the government to improve the provision of
sign language in local schools to facilitate learning for those who
are hard of hearing.
