Asessment of ukrainians of the law ‘on state language policy

During the period of 9 – 14 August 2012 Research & Branding Group company
conducted a public opinion survey to study the attitude of Ukrainians to
the law ‘On State Language Policy’. Data was gathered with face-to-face
interview method in 24 regions of Ukraine and Autonomous Republic of
Crimea. Respondents were selected by quota sampling, which represented
adult population of the country by place of residence (region), sex and
age. Sample size was composed of 3117 respondents. Predicted average
sampling error is +-2%.

*Main results  *
 Currently the vast majority of surveyed Ukrainians (77%) knows that on
August, 8th Predident of Ukraine signed the law ‘On State Language Policy’,
and only 20% of Ukrainians do not know about the signing of aforementioned
document.

 PUBLIC AWARENESS ON THE LAW ‘ON STATE LANGUAGE POLICY’
% to surveyed

  Ukrainians has ambivalent attitudes towards this law: 36% of respondent
has positive attitude and 35% of surveyed Ukrainians has negative attitude
towards this law, and 24% took a neutral stance.

  ATTITUTE OF UKRAINIANS TO THE LAW % to surveyed

  By far Ukrainians do not have unified opinion on the degree of the
importance of enactment of the law, which aim is to deal with the language
issues. 38% of respondents consider that enactment of this law as important
in general, and 34% of Ukrainians considers oppositely. 21% of Ukrainians
got a neutral position towards assessment of this law.

  ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THE UKRAINIAN LAW "ON THE BASIS OF
LANGUAGE POLICY" TO ADDRESS THE LANGUAGE ISSUES IN UKRAINE
% to surveyed

  45% of respondents believe that this law does not threaten Ukrainian
language, for 19% it was difficult to answer, and 35% thinks the opposite.
 37% of respondents agreed that the law would contribute to the national
compromise in Ukraine, for 32% it was difficult to answer, and 31% - do not
agree with the statement.
