Special Issue: Globalization from the Bottom Up: Indigenous Language
Planning and Policy Across Time, Space, and Place
Guest Editors:
Nancy H. Hornberger - University of Pennsylvania
Teresa L. McCarty - Arizona State University
This Special Issue of the International Multilingual Research Journal
explores “globalization from the bottom up” as it is realized in
language planning and policy by and for Indigenous peoples. The goal
of the special issue is to critically examine the dynamics of
interacting globalizing and localizing processes in Indigenous
language planning and policy.
The articles draw from ethnographic studies of language policy that
illuminate facets of “grassroots globalization” in Indigenous settings
around the world: Africa, South America, Native North America, and
Southeast Asia. They aim to incorporate Indigenous scholarship, to
privilege a view of language policy as both implicit and explicit, de
facto and de jure, and, when taken together, provide a basis for
critique and sharing of knowledge that democratizes the discourse on
the globalizing project in applied linguistics research.
