CFP: Colloquium on Language Politics in Global Perspective (AAAL)

AILA Research Network on Language Policy
***********************************
Dear LPREN Members:**** ****The Language Policy Research Network (LPREN)
is soliciting submissions for an LPREN-facilitated colloquium for the
American Association of Applied Linguistics (AAAL) in Dallas, TX, March
16-19, 2013. ****The AAAL conference theme is *Applied Linguistics in a
globalizing world, *and the proposed colloquium theme is Language politics
in global perspective: International, national and local policies in
practice. Dr. Terrence Wiley will serve as the colloquium
discussant.****Attempts
to manage or plan language use occur locally as well as globally, and are
characterized by reciprocal influences between local actors and global
processes (Canagarajah, 2005; Menken & García, 2010). In order to
understand language policy and planning in today’s world, and potentially
improve its outcomes, it is helpful to consider interdisciplinary and
international perspectives on language policy at all levels of governance,
from international declarations to institutional protocols, as well as
ground level policy-in-practice in families, community organizations, and
the marketplace. This colloquium aims to bring together diverse
perspectives on language politics, including papers that explore specific
policies, as well as the influences of policies on language practices, and
relations between local and global trends in language use. We welcome
abstracts from different locales, and drawing upon research in different
disciplines.****We would prefer to recieve abstracts in the format
specified by AAAL (300 words, please see
http://aaal.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=85 or the attached
document for details).****Please submit abstracts to lpren at cal.org no later
than July 20th. Abstracts will be reviewed, and all authors will be
contacted regarding the status of their submission by August 10th, prior to
the final AAAL submission deadline (August 17th).****** **For details of
the conference, go to http://www.aaal.org/ ****Please send questions to
lpren at cal.org****Best regards,****Sarah****
