Speaker to sign language law only if lawmakers comply with Rada
regulations, says press secretary

Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn has said he will sign the law
on the principles of state language policy only if lawmakers comply
with the parliament's procedure for the adoption of this law.

"The signing of the law on the principles of state language policy is
possible only under the condition of the strict adherence to the norms
of the law on the parliament's regulations, which contains a clear
procedure for the consideration of draft laws and their preparation
for signing by the head of the parliament," the press secretary of the
Ukrainian parliament speaker said in a comment on Lytvyn's attitude
towards signing the law before submitting it to the president.

The speaker didn't hold any meetings on the language law in parliament
on Wednesday, the press secretary said.

As reported, the Ukrainian parliament passed the law on the
foundations of state language policy, which considerably expands the
use of the Russian language, on Tuesday.

The parliamentary opposition says the law was passed with many violations.

Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn and his deputy Mykola
Tomenko announced on Wednesday that they had decided to resign from
their posts.
