All,
It continues to be a problem in the posting of messages on our list that
some people's
messages get blocked by Linguist-List, which archives our messages. I have
pointed
this out to L-L several times and asked for a clarification, but have not
received one.
If this happens to you, please just send me the message, and I'll forward
it. In the
meantime, here are some messages from our member Stacey Churchill.
ITEM 2
Here are links to a very useful series of items published one day last week
in our "national daily," if useful for the listserve:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/is-bilingualism-still-relevant-in-canada/article4365620/
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/bilingualism-deserves-more-recognition-appreciation-in-canada/article4365591/
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/canadians-share-their-views-on-official-bilingualism/article4366056/
The comments on the stories - over 1000 on one item - are an amazing
readout of widespread misunderstanding and ignorance, a fascinating glimpse
into why language policies are so difficult to manage in any society,
including a highly educated and relatively tolerant society like Canada.
