Francophone Group Urging Cornwall Residents to Stop Fighting Over
Language Policies at Community Hospital

The Assemblée de la Francophonie de l'Ontario is wading into the
bilingual hiring issue at the Cornwall Hospital. The president is
calling for some respect and understanding between the two sides.
Denis Vaillancourt says residents forget that they worked together
when they formed the Cornwall Community Hospital.

"It was an amalgamation of the Hotel Dieu and the former Cornwall
Memorial, I believe," Vaillancourt tells CFRA. "Obviously, both
language communities worked for those hospitals in the past and it was
a coming together of the two groups. The two provide a unique and good
service to the community."

The hospital has come under fire over the bilingual hiring policy,
which some people believe is keeping anglophones from being hired.
A spokesperson for the Community Hospital says they are just following
the legal requirements under the French Language Services Act of
Ontario.
