Legal action against state institutions of Sri Lanka not providing
documents in both Sinhala and Tamil
Wed, May 23, 2012, 08:27 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
May 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka plans to take legal measures against state
institutions that do not provide services in both Sinhala and Tamil
languages. The government plans to amend the National Language Act to
streamline the national language policy, the Chairman of the National
Language Commission Nimal R. Ranasinghe has said.
The National Language Commission is tasked with making necessary
recommendations to implement national language policy in public
institutions. Government institutions are bound to provide services to
the public both in Sinhala and Tamil languages and therefore, all
documents, forms and name boards will be made available in the two
languages, Ranasinghe has told the state-run radio SLBC.
However, some institutions are still issuing circulars only in Sinhala
language causing difficulties to the government officials and public
in the Northern and Eastern provinces. The Chairman has said that
legal measures will be taken against the institutions that do not
follow the language policy rules properly.
