É’s Irish Language Policy: Fennell’s report published
RTÉ’s Irish Language Policy: Fennell’s report published

A report drafting a new Irish Language policy for RTÉ by
communications adviser agus director of Stillwater Communications,
Cillian Fennell was released to the public last week.

The first stages of an Irish Language review began as a result of
RTÉ’s lack of a policy for broadcasting through Irish and due to
changes which were proposed for Irish Language news services. Although
the report has been available for some time a decision was made to
make it available to the public as part of the review.

In this document, Fennell examines the role of the Irish language in
each range of broadcasting in RTÉ and the way in which The National
Broadcaster is complying with the Broadcasting Act of 2009 and the
Public Service Broadcasting Charter. By also examining RTÉ’s potential
role in

The 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language, Fennell suggests a policy
which can be applied to all forms of broadcasting. The full report is
available through this link
http://www.rte.ie/documents/about/a-proposed-strategy-for-rtes-irish-language-output.pdf.

The report is currently being considered by a Working Group who will
put together an Irish Language policy for RTÉ. In order to draw up a
policy which reflects the views of the public, RTÉ is now accepting
comments.

What kind of Irish language media do you want from RTÉ? You can submit
answers and general comments to teanga at rte.ie or by post to;

Irish Language Policy for RTÉ
2nd Flr Corporate Centre,
RTÉ,
Dublin 4.

The final date for submissions is 7 December 2012. The Working Group’s
report will be published early in the New Year 2013.
