Party leader Kris Austin says people need to be hired for their
qualifications, not the language they speak
FREDERICTON - The People's Alliance of New Brunswick says the
provincial government's policies on bilingualism are not working and
are driving people away in search of jobs.
Leader Kris Austin held a press conference in front of the provincial
legislature in Fredericton yesterday, flanked by purple political
banners.
"Too many qualified people in this province are being turned down for
employment in favour of fulfilling language quotas," Austin said. "We
promote equality, but political correctness should not overshadow
government's responsibility to provide equal service to all New
Brunswickers in as efficient a manner as possible."
Austin said too many unilingual anglophones with good qualifications
are fleeing for jobs in Ontario and Alberta and too many qualified
unilingual francophones are leaving for employment in Quebec.
He blamed this on the fact they can't speak both official languages
rather than the weak local job market and economy.
The party, which has no seats in the legislature after mounting its
first campaign in the 2010 election, made the announcement a week
after David Alward's Tories kicked Fundy-River Valley MLA Jim Parrott
out of caucus.
The retired heart surgeon had said the Progressive Conservative
government must stop spending money on the duplication of health
services in English and French, among other criticisms.
While saying he supported bilingualism, Austin called for the end of
duality in government services as a way to save money and shed the
province's $261-million deficit and $10-billion debt.
