Lviv regional council has declared the law "On the principles of state
language policy" invalid on the territory of the region.
Sixty four deputies voted for this proposal.
Lviv Regional Council Deputy Iryna Farion initiated the proposal. She
proposed to make amendments to the program for development of
Ukrainian language and Ukrainian culture" adding a clause "to declare
the law on the principles of state policy language invalid on the
territory of the region."
"I propose to declare invalid Kivalov's (the author of the law) law on
the territory of Lviv region, as it is in essence anti-state, and
there were serious violations [of procedure] during its adoption," she
said.
As reported, The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a bill initiated by
the Regions Party "On the principles of state language policy" on July
3.
On Aug. 8, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych signed this law, and
charged the Cabinet of Ministers with creating a working group to draw
up proposals on improving the legislation.
The law came into force on Aug. 10. It foresees the possibility of the
existence of other official languages in those regions in which the
percentage of persons from national minorities exceed 10%.
