Ombudsman criticises restrictive language policy for public consultations
Back in 2010, in the course of the public consultation process for the
regulation on roadworthiness testing, FEMA had criticised that the
consultation form was only available in English, disregarding the fact
that many European citizens are therefore excluded from the
consultation process. Now the European Ombudsman has officially
criticised the European Commission for its approach.
The European Ombudsman, P. Nikiforos Diamandouros, has criticised the
Commission’s refusal to publish public consultations in all 23 EU
languages. This follows a complaint from a Spanish lawyer about many
public consultation documents only being available in English or in a
limited number of EU languages, even if they are intended for the
general public.
