Sri Lankan government advised to appoint bilingual officers to public
institutions
Mon, Oct 29, 2012, 08:26 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
Oct 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Official Languages Commission (OLC) has
decided to recommend creating a position of a bilingual officer in
every government office in order to implement the official language
policy. Chairman of the Commission Nimal R. Ranawaka has said that a
proposal would be submitted soon to the government in this regard.
The Constitution of Sri Lanka as amended by the 13th Amendment defines
Sinhala and Tamil as the national and official languages and English
as the link language. Official Languages Commission points out that
any citizen of the state has the right to deal with the Government
institutions in any one of the above three languages although the
government has failed to serve the public in all three languages due
to the lack of proficiency among the government employees in the
second and the third languages.
The Official Languages Commission is a statutory body established to
oversee the implementation of the official language policy among other
functions. It is entitled to recommend principles of policy relating
to the use of the Official Languages and to monitor and supervise
compliance with provisions.
