 Policies to facilitate English language faculties discussed

Different policies and implementation of strategic decisions were
taken into consideration to facilitate the English language faculty at
universities and colleges in the third meeting of the National
Committee on English (NCE) held at Learning Innovation Division Higher
Education Commission (HEC).

The meeting was held under the auspices of the English Language
Teaching Reforms (ELTR) Project Phase II of Higher Education
Commission. The main purpose of this meeting was to address ELT
related issues to facilitate English language teaching fraternity and
put the recommendations for smooth and proper functioning of the ELT
in Higher Education Institutes (HEIs).


The committee is comprised of distinguished English language teaching
experts from all over Pakistan. The Director General Learning
Innovation Division HEC Noor Amna Malik in her welcome remarks
appreciated the efforts, support, professional commitment and
expertise of the NCE members to accomplish the goal of improving ELT
standards in Pakistan. Dr. Saeeda Asadullah presided over the meeting
as chairperson NCE. Noor Amna Malik also shared future prospects at
the NCE forum.



The members shared their views and knowledge for the quality of
English Language in HEIs across Pakistan. After detailed presentation
on the ELTR achievements of Phase II and outcomes of second



NCE meeting, the forum declared open for the discussion and
deliberation on the agenda items.



The members debated on all the concerned issues which are being faced
by the project towards the development of English Language Teaching
(ELT) in HEIs.



It is worth mentioning here that the ELTR Project was launched on the
recommendations of NCE in July 2004 to bring qualitative improvement
in English language teaching and learning.



The NCE put forward the recommendations for technical and professional
enhancement of English language faculty of colleges across Pakistan.
The committee also recommended enlarging the radius of the project in
terms of bridging the gap of language and literature teaching faculty.
Imperative suggestions were given by NCE members for improvisation of
ELTR Project activities.
