The Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration is setting up “Kampung Inggris,” or English-language
villages, in areas across the country in the hopes of boosting the business skills and employment
prospects of migrant workers.
“The concept of establishing English-language villages in transmigrant locations will serve as a
breakthrough in increasing the human resource qualities of transmigrants and the surrounding
communities so they can learn and hone their English skills,” Manpower and Transmigration Minister
Muhaimin Iskandar said on Friday.
Muhaimin said the project was modeled after the first kampung Inggris: Pare village in Kediri, East
Java, where all residents speak English, although to varying degrees of fluency.
A pilot project is underway in the town of Cahaya Baru, in the Barito Kuala district of South
Kalimantan.
