Karnataka Unaided Schools Managements’ Association (KUSMA) legal adviser K V Dhananjay has lashed
out at the state government for ‘hypocrisy’ in its language policy in schools.

Presenting his argument before the Supreme Court from September 18 to 20, Dhananjay said Karnataka’s
use of Mahatma Gandhi’s words that a child should receive education in its native language is
‘selective’ and not complete.

The state language policy mandates schools to have Kannada as the medium of instruction or a child’s
first language till class 5.

English only for the rich students?

“There is a lot of hypocrisy when it comes to this language policy, which is applicable only to the
state board schools. Schools affiliated to the Central boards are wholly exempted. As a result,
children of the rich, influential, ironic proponents of Kannada literature and lawmakers simply
attend English medium in Central schools whereas children of lesser mortals, that is, children from
middle class and poor sections of the state are deprived of English medium education,” Dhananjay
said on Tuesday.
