Need of National language policy

JULY 9, KATHMANDU. Experts concerned have pointed out the need for a
national language policy of Nepal that would address the multi-lingual
education policy of the country.

Speaking at the national workshop on development of Nepal’s language policy
organized by Nepal Academy and the Department of Education here today, they
said the different interpretation and analysis of the language provision in
the constitution was having a negative impact on Nepal’s language policy.

Though the latest census showed that there are people of 123 languages of
four language families in Nepal, some linguistic communities’ language have
not received national identity. Linguistic diversity should not only be
limited to liability but regarded as a national asset, they added.

Presenting a working paper at the programme, Prof. Dr Dan Raj Regmi said a
long-term national language plan was essential in order to take the country
towards the path of peace and development.

Also presenting a working paper, Chancellor of Nepal Academy Bairagi Kainla
suggested formation of a high-level language commission for the
preservation and promotion of languages in Nepal.

Linguist Amrit Yonzon, Director General of Department of Education Dr
Lavadev Awasthi, Prof. Dr Hemanga Raj Adhikari, Malla K Sundar, Prof Dr
Yogendra Prasad Yadav and Dr Lal Syankarelu Rapacha stressed the need of a
national language policy to address all concerns relating to the languages
in the country.

At the programme, teachers involved in multi-lingual teaching in
Kanchanpur, Palpa, Rasuwa, Dhankuta, Sunsari and Kapilvastu shared their
experience of teaching in two or more languages in multi-lingual schools.
Earlier, inaugurating the workshop, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil
Aviation Ram Kumar Shrestha said as extinction of language would lead to
extinction of culture and identity a concrete policy should be developed to
preserve and promote languages.
