What can we say about the relationship between language and democracy? Think about the oratory of political debates, about the constitution of the world in public media, about interaction between administration and citizen, about voiceless votes, language policy, tortures, dialogues under surveillance, approaches to liquid democracy: is there a "(un)democratic language" or a "language of democracy"? But maybe these questions are wrong due to the included assumptions: What "is" "democracy" for itself? What does it mean, when people, politicians or linguists want to speak about "language and democracy"?

About these and similar questions we want to discuss - not only with linguists, but also with the colleagues from the literary scholar, communication and media studies, with lawyers, political and social scientists.

The aim of the conference is to becoming more sensitive for the conflict-ridden relationship between language and democracy. We want to discuss the current problems both in a macro and a micro perspective, to analyse their historical formation and looking for prospective research programmes.

The results of the conference shall be published under a creative commons licence.

zu einer interdisziplin�ren Tagung vom 02. bis 03.10.2014 in Siegen

Wie h�ngen Sprache und Demokratie miteinander zusammen? Denken wir an die Rhetorik machtpolitischer Debatten, an die sprachliche Zubereitung der Welt im medialen Baukasten, an die Interaktion zwischen Beh�rden und B�rgern, an den Indikativ der Gesetzb�cher, an ?Stimm"-Lose vor den Wahlurnen, an Sprachenpolitik, Folterverh�re und �berwachtes Sprechen, Ans�tze ?flie�ender" Demokratie -, gibt es eine ?(un)demokratische Sprache" oder eine ?(Un)Sprache der Demokratie"? Oder sind diese Fragen falsch gestellt, weil schon zu voraussetzungsreich: Was ?ist" denn ?Demokratie", was hei�t es, �ber ?Sprache und Demokratie" sprechen zu wollen, als Mitb�rger, Politiker - oder als Linguist?

Ziel der Tagung ist, inner- und au�erhalb der wissenschaftlichen Community f�r das spannungsvolle Verh�ltnis von ?Sprache und Demokratie" zu sensibilisieren, aktuelle Konfliktherde und Problemstellungen auf sprach-gesellschaftlicher Makro- wie Mikroebene zu benennen, ihre historische Genese zu analysieren und Ans�tze f�r l�sungsorientierte, weiterf�hrende und m�glicherweise effektiver organisierte Forschungsprogramme zu skizzieren. Wer sich diesem Arbeitsfeld bereits zuwendet oder zuk�nftig zuwenden m�chte, soll hier Raum f�r einen nachhaltigen Austausch finden.

Die Ergebnisse sollen in einer frei zug�nglichen Form ver�ffentlicht werden.

We invite you to send us a proposal for a talk (300-500 words) at the latest until February 28, 2014.

Wir laden alle Kolleginnen und Kollegen - nicht nur Linguisten, sondern auch Literatur-, Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaftler, Politologen, Juristen und Sozialwissenschaftler - herzlich dazu ein, uns bis zum 28. Februar 2014 ein Abstract als Vortragsvorschlag (300-500 W�rter) zuzusenden.
