 U. of Colorado Backs Away From Renaming Dorms Using Arapaho Spellings

The University of Colorado has backed away from a proposal to rename two of
the dormitories on the Boulder campus using traditional spellings of the
Arapaho Tribe, *The Daily Camera

A campus planning group had approved a plan to rename two dorms—which are
known as Kittredge West and Kittredge Central—Nowoo3 Hall and Houusoo Hall,
respectively. Those names are taken from Arapaho words for two tribal
leaders.

But a proposal that will go before the university’s Board of Regents seeks
to rename the buildings Niwot Hall and Little Raven Hall, using English
spellings. The English spellings were part of an earlier proposal.

More than 20 faculty members had signed a letter to the regents asking them
to approve the plan with traditional spellings. Student groups and others
also supported that idea, according to the newspaper.

Ryan Huff, a university spokesman, said the Boulder administration was
“committed” to the original proposal with English spellings. “We believe
these names will be more easily recognized and referenced to by students,
visitors and emergency responders,” he said.
