[lg policy] Problem accessing archives of lgpolicy-list

All: I don't know how many of you have encountered a problem accessing
the archives of our listserv, but I recently discovered that due to some
reorganization at Linguist-List, which hosts our archives, the address to
click on to access them has changed. I have attempted to access the page
where this problem occurs, but for the moment, I am unable to change the
url from my home computer, and will have to go in to Penn and have a
programmer help me do it. The problem with this, of course, is that the
long winter holidays are upon us, and Penn will be shut down for about 10
days.

If you have never tried to access our archives, you are missing a valuable
asset. Linguist-List has archived our messages for 12 years, and someone
wanting to see what has been posted about a topic (such as "Karnataka")
could easily see all the messages sent on that topic, and download them.
(I did this myself a while back while working on a paper on the topic of
language policy drivers' licensing in Alabama.) For reasons that I don't
understand, our archives are not accessible by Google, but can easily be
accessed by anyone with a computer.

In the meantime, until I can get some help with changing the URL for the
archives, you can use a temporary fix.

1. The URL for accessing the archives is on the page that appears when you
click on the button LISTSERV. It says "To access our archives, go to
http://listserv.linguistlist.org/archives/lgpolicy-list.html" If you do
this, it will
give you an error message.

2. So click on the "bad" URL and erase it from the url line on your
computer, and replace it with "
http://listserv.linguistlist.org/pipermail/lgpolicy-list/" This will get
you to the archives.

Since nobody has complained to me about the inaccessibility of the archives
in the last few weeks, I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who HAS
used them in the past, and how useful they were. If you don't know about
them, you're missing out on a valuable resource!
