Govt tasked on indigenous language policy

As Nigerians on Wednesday joined their counterparts across the globe in
celebrating the world Yoruba Day, the government has been called upon to
evolve policies and programme that will promote and encourage indigenous
languages in the country.
The head, Yoruba department (HoD), Kwara State College of Education,
Ilorin, Mr. Sunday Omotosho made the call in his lecture at a Yoruba Day
programme organized by Burhannudeeen Junior Secondary School, Isale Koko,
Ilorin, the state capital.
Mr. Omotosho who expressed dissatisfaction over the way and manner
Nigerians handled their mother tongue, appealed to government at all levels
to as a matter of priority come up with policy that will encourage the
speaking of mother tongue, in both private and public functions.
Mr. Omotosho who was the guest lecturer at the occasion also advised
parents and guardians to encourage their children and wards to accord
almost priority to their mother tongue.
According to him, the earlier the government adds more value to Nigerians
indigenous languages the better for the progress and advancement of their
country.
Mr. Omotosho lamented that parents have great role to play in ensuring that
children change their attitudes towards indigenous languages.
In her address, the principal of the school, Hajia Risikat Ahmed sid the
programme was organised by the school to commemorate the World Yoruba Day,
improving the Yoruba culture across the globe.
Haji Ahmed expressed optimism that the programme would go along way in
promoting Yoruba language in Nigerian society and beyond.
Earlier in his address, the school chairman organizing committee for this
year's World Yoruba Day, Mr. Lawal Abdullateef Edun said the school has
been organizing various Yoruba oriented programmes such as question and
answer (Talo maa) to encourage Yoruba heritage and culture among students.
