 RE: lgpolicy-list Digest, Vol 58, Issue 21

Hi,

As someone who has done research on the sociolinguistics of Ukraine and
its relationship to educational practices, I just want to add that the map
Professor Schiffman has shared shows the general tendencies in the country.
However, there are also villages in eastern Ukraine where Ukrainian is
predominantly spoken. In fact, one of the main dialectal sources of the
Ukrainian language is Poltava, which is in "Yanukovych country." In
addition, there is a minority in cities in the east that supports European
integration, as evidenced by the demonstrations and toppling of Lenin
monuments. The parallel in the U.S. context is the difference between
red/blue state maps by state and by county. The key difference, perhaps,
is that Russophone Ukrainians are more likely to support relationships
with both Europe and Russia, whereas Ukrainian-speaking nationalists in
Western Ukraine reject any ideology that suggests Ukraine and Russia are
and should be connected.
