language law currently in effect *24-02-2014 10:01*
*Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada has abolished the law on the foundations of the
state language policy adopted on July 3, 2012. A total of 232 MPs out of
334 voted for the abolition on February 23.Speaking in parliament, leader
of the Batkivschyna faction Arseniy Yatseniuk assured the Russian-speaking
community in Ukraine that their rights are safeguarded by the Constitution
and laws of Ukraine. He also stressed the need to develop a new law on
state language policy guidelines. *
After the abolition of the July 3 law, it is the language law of the
Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic dated 1989 that is currently in effect
in Ukraine. In July 2012 the Verkhovna Rada passed the language law
initiated by the Party of Regions. The law came into force on August 10,
2012. It permitted the use of two official languages in regions where the
size of an ethnic minority exceeds 10%.Russian was declared the second
official language in Odesa, Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhia,
Sevastopol, Dnipropetrovsk, Luhansk and Donetsk regions.Hungarian, Moldovan
and Rumanian were declared official languages in several towns in the west
of Ukraine.
