I interpreted Dr. Mostari's comments as ironic rather than meaning offense towards issues of language policy. F

Language planning as superficial
Dr. Mostari and colleagues
Apologies for this second message. Have you heard of the Soweto Riots of 16
June 1976? I am attaching a document containing a programme commemorating
that day, almost 50 years ago. Maybe it demonstrates the important role
language can play in a country. Vic

Dr. Mostari
Working in South Africa, and facing the enormous challenges of language
planning to the country's economic, educational, social and political
development, I can't imagine anyone regarding language policy, language
planning, language plan implementation, language plan implementation
evaluation and language planning revision as superficial. Just think of poor
black South Africans living in rural areas, hardly ever effectively exposed
to English, having to "study" through the medium of English!

Subject: Re: [lg policy] Supervision Offer
Dr. Mostari,
I do not think that issues such as language planning, globalisation,
language contact and language change are superficial issues, nor do I think
that they are unrelated to issues of bilingualism and code-switching. Please
feel free to send your excellent students who are interested in these issues
to us here at York University.
thanks
Eve
