PANAJI*: *Jagotic Konknni Songhotton will conduct a global survey of
Konkani in order to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of the language that
is spoken along the Konkan belt, secretary general, Eric Ozario said at a
press conference.

The survey 'Hanv Konkani' will be conducted among Konkani speakers across
the world, irrespective of dialect, religion and script and will be
utilized to chalk out the roadmap for Konkani's future, Ozario said.

The data that the survey collates will be analyzed by the statistical
department at Mangalore University and a Konkani Language Plan will be
drafted for implementation based on the analyzed data, the pressnote
stated. A Konkani Language Policy will also be prepared which will then be
submitted to the respective state governments for implementation.

The first-of-its-kind survey will go on till the end of January and by
August, Jagotick Konknni Songhotton hopes to be ready with its Konkani
Language Plan, Ozario said.

All Konkanis above the age of 15 can participate in the survey. Ozario
reassured people that the concept of the survey was to unite and preserve
Konkani and not to divide people according to scripts or dialects.

"This survey is not to divide, it is going to unite the Konkani people.
That's our purpose," Ozario said. "We respect all scripts and without this
approach no unity in Konkani can come about."

Besides the survey being in English, the survey will also be administered
in five other scripts in regions ranging right from Bombay in north
Maharasthtra to Kerala, president of the association, Tomazinho Cardozo
added.

For suitable statistical analysis, the survey would need to get at least
5,000 responses, Ozario said while also emphasizing that the survey sample
size has to be spread out across states, regions and scripts and must not
be skewed towards just one specific community or dialect.

"It is vital for every person who calls himself or herself Konkani to take
the survey, so that it is easier for us to know how we can preserve Konkani
and make it thrive," Cardozo said.
