*Sirsi: KUSMA warns govt*

Sirsi: "Following the Supreme Court verdict on language policy, the
problems revolving around the medium of instruction issue will be solved in
another two months. In case, the government authorities refuse registration
to unaided English medium schools coming under Karnataka Unaided Schools
Management Association in the pretext of the language policy, they may have
to go to jail and face contempt of court proceedings", warned Karnataka
Unaided Schools Management Association (KUSMA) President V R N Reddy and
Legal Advisor K V Dhananjay.

Speaking at a joint press conference here on Sunday, they said that between
1994 and 2008, there were some restrictions on English Medium schools based
on language policy. But in 2008, the language policy was scrapped. On May
6, 2014, the Supreme Court, in its historic verdict, even dismissed the
review petition of the State government and held that the government could
not impose Kannada as a medium of instruction on the State. But following
the apathy of the government, as many as 1,800 English Medium Schools
coming under KUSMA have been recorded as Kannada Medium Schools in
government records.

"The association has contemplated civil suit against the government for
derecognizing some of the schools (for running English medium) and against
alleged harassment of schools by officials of the Department of Public
Instruction in this regard", they said. Mr Reddy said that they had been
requesting the government to convert existing Kannada- medium schools to
English schools and even though six months have passed, the government has
not replied to this.

KUSMA has threatened to file a Rs 100-crore civil lawsuit against State
government officials for not implementing the Supreme Court verdict on the
medium of instruction in schools. "We have every right to run
English-medium schools since the Supreme Court verdict in this regard is in
our favor. Irrespective of whether the government is going to process our
applications or not, we will run classes in English medium", Mr Reddy
clarified. KUSMA Joint Secretary Vinay Shetty, members Abdul Sattar,
Shantkumar, S L Bhat, Shrinivas Halappa Jakalannanavar and others were
present.
