A language worth saving
Dr. Jay Powell was one of the pioneers in Aboriginal language
revitalization in the 1960-1980s, the "now-forgotten" decades when a
handful of linguists and anthropologists worked diligently with few
resources to record, preserve and revitalize these moribund languages. He
also mastered Chinook Jargon and prepared curriculum materials to teach
this NW Coast trade language. A brief survey of usage undertaken in 2014 by
my Linguistic Anthropology students revealed little knowledge of this once
thriving language. It would be such fun to see it resurrected. As Glavin
says in this article, it was a truly democratic language, spoken and
enjoyed by all.
