Stellenbosch University rector agrees to meet with protesting students

The group was supported by UCT's ‘Rhodes Must Fall’ movement.

Some students and staff at Stellenbosch University want the newly elected
rector to speed up the process of transformation at the university.

CAPE TOWN – Stellenbosch University’s Vice Rector, Arnold Schoonwinkel, has
set a date to meet students protesting for transformation.

Members of the movement, Open Stellenbosch, today marched to the
administration building and handed over a memorandum listing demands around
transformation to vice chancellor Wim de Villiers.

The group was supported by UCT's ‘Rhodes Must Fall’ movement.

Students marched and protested outside the Administration building for two
hours this afternoon.

The group refused to leave before vice rector Arnold Schoonwinkel came to
discuss their demands.

Schoonwinkel eventually arrived and told the crowd he has taken a look at
the memorandum, which claims the institution's language policy excludes
students who don’t speak Afrikaans.

He says the university’s committed to transformation.

Schoonwinkel says management will meet with the group next week Wednesday
to hear their grievances.
