Johannesburg - Stellenbosch University on Sunday announced that it would
create a fund to assist in the development of Xhosa as an academic
language, as well as to encourage academic works in Afrikaans.
"A key component of the University’s language policy is that the
institution accepts responsibility for the promotion of Xhosa as an
academic language and language of social interaction judiciously," said
Rector and Vice-Chancellor Wim de Villiers in a statement.
"The fund will help realise this in a practical way."
The fund of R150 000 would be awarded each year for work that is done to
develop Xhosa usage in academia.
"The full criteria will be determined over the course of the next few
months."
Stellenbosch University also said that it would make a contribution of
similar value towards a prize recognising academic work conducted and
published in Afrikaans.
"Today, a scant amount of research is being published via [the] medium [of]
Afrikaans," said De Villiers.
"Against the backdrop of a great number of prizes and awards for research
in English, the prize is an initiative and incentive that should be
welcomed," he said.
The prize has been initiated by the Het Jan Marais Nationale Fonds.
Naspers will also contribute to the funding of it.
