student command says the University of Pretoria’s decision to scrap
Afrikaans as a primary language of instruction is a step in the right
direction.

The decision follows several protests by students
<http://ewn.co.za/Topic/University-of-Pretoria> at the institution calling
for a language policy change.

While the EFF student command has welcomed the decision, it has been met
with resistance by civil rights organisation Afriforum.

Student command president Mpho Morolane says he hopes management will
adhere to the new terms.

“Management of these universities sometimes take decisions they don’t
adhere to, as the EFF it’s our responsibility to ensure that we monitor the
situation.”

The university's Anna-Retha Bouwer says the institution hopes the change in
language policy will promote social cohesion and inclusivity.

“English will become the primary language of instruction and assessment.
The goal of the new policy is to facilitate social cohesion and promote
inclusivity.”
