Many list members will have seen this story doing the rounds, e.g.
https://goo.gl/FsieiI, https://goo.gl/OGW19T.
It's based on a BBC radio special feature, available to listen to here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08kys4c
I'm never altogether sure how long BBC radio content will be available for online
listening, so I rendered it into an MP3 which I've put online for everyone to
download and use more reliably (including offline) for teaching/research:
https://goo.gl/1RfU5G
Possible undergraduate essay topics include (!):
- the way different media outlets covered the story (https://goo.gl/eml0Up)
- all sorts of stuff about social semiotics and public/private space;
- comparisons to officially sanctioned sign-correctors, e.g. https://youtu.be/qKOGgYaqwhg
- differing regional attitudes to this sort of thing, e.g. Eastern Daily Press had a
nice take on opposing views in Norwich, https://goo.gl/vbOVqS (probably ever so
slightly journalistically skewed...).
Enjoy!
Dave
