With the language shifts as a result of the integration of Association of
Southeast Asian

Nations, there is a need to review general language policies, research,
curriculums, assessment practices, teacher preparation and teaching and
learning strategies. Demand for English as medium of communication and
instruction is also expected to increase in the Asean. It is because of
these reasons that the Philippine Association for Language Teaching (Palt),
Inc. is hosting an international conference at University of Santo Tomas,
Dec. 7-9.

Its theme is “Language Education in Asia in the Context of Asean.”

UST Graduate School dean Marilu Madrunio, Palt president, said the
conference would feature key speakers and sessions on language teaching,
research and policy. Speakers include Maria Cynthia Rose Bautista, vice
president for academic affairs of the University of the Philippines-
Diliman; Matt Keener, cultural affairs officer of the United States Embassy
in Manila; Anne Pakir, director of the National University of Singapore’s
International Relations Office; Ahmar Mahboob, associate professor of the
University of Sydney; and Shirley Ando of the the Japan Association for
Language Teaching.
