Economic Development Department Releases Language Policy
2017-03-08
*Department of Economic Development*
The economic development department has published its language policy in
Government Gazette 40660.
The policy is crafted in terms of the Use of Official Languages Act.
The act determines that every national department, national public entity
and national public enterprise must adopt a language policy on its use of
official languages and put a language unit in place.
English will be used for inter-and intra-government communication as well
as international communication.
All official languages will be taken into consideration when undertaking
public communication.
At this stage, a language unit has not been established. However, its
functions will be carried out by the communication unit until a language
unit is set up.
Meanwhile, the department recently briefed the economic development
committee on its 3rd quarter performance for 2016/17.
Further detail was provided on the construction sector settlement reached
with the Competition Commission in October 2016.
The settlement agreement consists of four components, namely, a fine,
reparation package, transformation package and an integrity commitment by
the various CEOs to “take all steps to avoid collusion and corruption in
their dealings with the state, their competitors and their customers and to
partner with Government in exposing all forms of corruption and tender
irregularities.”
In terms of the variable tariff on wheat, the department reported that the
International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) has made
recommendations to address the price formula.
The ITAC was currently being considered.
