Joshua A. Fishman Award 2018
De Gruyter Mouton is happy to announce the establishment of the Joshua A. Fishman Award for the best recently unpublished dissertation on a topic pertaining to the sociology of language. The award, which carries a cash prize of €3,000, is intended to support scholars at the early stages of their careers working on sociology of language. This award is meant to honor the outstanding scholar Joshua A. Fishman and his lifetime achievements and to foster innovative, high-quality research in sociology of language, the field that he so prominently shaped for many decades. The Joshua A. Fishman Award will be presented every two years, and winning manuscripts will be recommended for publication in the Mouton book series Contributions to the Sociology of Language (CSL).
Deadline for submissions for the 2018 Fishman Award is December 31, 2017.
Rules and Regulations
1. The Joshua A. Fishman award is open to scholars from any country at the early stages of their careers.
2. To be eligible, a dissertation must have been completed, successfully defended, and accepted after June 2015. The dissertation must have been accepted as part of the requirement for a Ph.D. or comparable doctoral degree.
3. Submissions are accepted in English language only.
4. Submissions must be delivered electronically in PDF format (with embedded fonts where necessary) to the award committee at fishmanaward at degruyter.com no later than December 31, 2017. Submissions should include the following attachments:
* Cover letter
* Curriculum vitae
* Title of dissertation
* 300-500 word abstract of dissertation
* Table of contents of dissertation
* A single chapter of the dissertation that best lays out the conceptual contribution of the dissertation to sociology of language. The full manuscript will be requested of finalists.
* Names, affiliations, and email of dissertation chair and committee members
* A brief narrative explaining what the work contributes to the sociology of language (maximum 1000 words)
The award-winning manuscript will be recommended for publication in the CSL series of De Gruyter Mouton. Publication will be at the sole discretion of De Gruyter Mouton.

Joshua A. Fishman is considered a founder of the field of the sociology of language. From the early 1970s until his death in 2015, he was the editor of the International Journal of the Sociology of Language<https://www.degruyter.com/view/j/ijsl.2017.2017.issue-248/issue-files/ijsl.2017.2017.issue-248.xml?rskey=5PWTXB&result=1> (IJSL), as well as the book series Contributions to the Sociology of Language<https://www.degruyter.com/view/serial/16644?rskey=WemnEQ&result=1>, both published by De Gruyter Mouton, which is De Gruyter’s renowned linguistics imprint. De Gruyter honors his intellectual contribution with this award to ensure that Fishman’s additions to the field of sociolinguistics continue to thrive among emerging scholars. It is De Gruyter’s contribution to fostering innovative, high-quality research in sociology of language.
The Joshua A. Fishman Award will be presented every two years, and winning manuscripts will be recommended for publication in the De Gruyter Mouton book series Contributions to the Sociology of Language (CSL)<https://www.degruyter.com/view/serial/16644?rskey=WemnEQ&result=1>.

The award is open to scholars from any country at the early stages of their careers. Eligible dissertations must be in English and must have been completed, successfully defended and accepted after 25 June 2015 and should have been part of the requirement for a Ph.D. or comparable doctoral degree. Deadline for submissions for the 2018 Fishman Award is 31 December 2017. More details will be posted to the IJSL webpage in the next weeks.
