*Welsh speakers have welcomed Welshpool Town Council’s (WTC) admission that
it needs to improve its Welsh language policy, following an error-strewn
Transport Festival translation at the weekend.*

Town Clerk Robert Robertson made an immediate apology for the poster error
and said it will be put right in future, but the bigger picture is that the
Town Council has conceded that they have not done enough to promote the
Welsh language and has proposed a new Policy.

It goes before full council on Tuesday night and is expected to be adopted.

This has been roundly welcomed by local Welsh speakers with one publishing
on Facebook: “WTC are making a positive move to respect the Welsh language
by proposing a new Welsh Language Policy and Action Plan in the next
meeting. This is a huge step forward.

“I will be there in the public gallery, if you also feel strongly about
this issue please come along.”

Another one has written: “I attended a council meeting where the Town
Council discussed the revision of their Language Policy. From the public
viewing area, it was clear that the Council had understood that the time
for development had come and that their strategy for future policy
execution was positive and far-reaching.

“Mistakes are bound to be made along the way but the intended direction of
travel is the right one. The council are in dialogue with interested
parties and if you care about this issue - give the Council some support
with their new approach.”

Town Councillor David Senior responded to the recent criticism by saying:
“We know an error has been made, but we need to remain positive. We need to
applaud the progress the Town Council are making. Hopefully we will soon
have a new progressive policy. Mistakes are made, but let’s not leave those
making an effort wonder why they bothered.”
