Guwahati: In order to protect Assamese Language from extinction, Asom
Sahitya Sabha on Tuesday appeals Government of Assam to implement Assam
Official Language Act in the next cabinet meeting.

Addressing a press conference at Radhagobindo Baruah Auditorium in
Guwahati, Asom Sahitya Sabha president, Paramananda Rajbongshi said that
without the implementation of Assam Official Language Act or policy in the
state, the numbers of Assamese speakers in Assam will go down to 30% to 40%.

The body also appealed that the implementation of the Language policy
should begin from Assam Secretariat.

As per the proposal forwarded by the Asom Sahitya Sabha to Government of
Assam, the body urged to make both English and Native Language of Assam
mandatory in all the Universities of Assam including the Private
Universities, Educational Institutes etc to which the Chief Secretary of
Assam has also given a positive gesture.

Apart from this, Asom Sahitya Sabha has also mentioned that as per the
Language policy Bodo, Bengali languages should also be made mandatory in
all the Universities, Colleges and Educational Institutes in the state.

The government of India earlier made a major change in its draft education
policy after an outcry over a three-language plan making Hindi compulsory.

Several prominent organizations in the state, including the Asom Sahitya
Sabha and AASU cautioned the BJP-led Government at the centre not to impose
any idea that is not regionally acceptable.
