Implementation of Official Language Act
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI: The Assam Sahitya Sabha, which is observing 2019 as the year of
Pledge for Mother Tongue, is trying to rope in the numerous Bihu Udjapon
Committees of the State in its movement for the implementation of the Assam
Official Language Act and mother tongue in the State.
In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, Assam Sahitya Sabha
president Paramananda Rajbongshi said: “The Official Language Act is still
to be implemented properly in the State because of the lenient language
policy adopted by the State government. Barring Assam, in all other States
in the country all names, right from administrative machineries to shops,
are written in their respective official languages. The deviation from the
accepted norm in Assam is unfortunate for the Assamese nationality. The
Assam Sahitya Sabha has all along been putting pressure on heads of various
departments and deputy commissioners for the implementation of the Official
Language Act.
