Business Day
Language planning will spur national development
ola Timothy Babatunde, a professor of Applied Linguistics at the University
of Ilorin has said for Nigeria to grow literally and develop nationally,
there is a need to adopt a progressive live-and-let-live attitude to
national and individual language planning...He said ?Nigeria must be
functionally literate in as many indigenous languages as possible. Our
studies have revealed that persuasive communication can thrive even in the
environment of dissuasive forces.

Bipartisan bill would strike ?outdated and derogatory language? on
intellectual disability from federal law
A bipartisan House group on Friday introduced a bill to strike more than
two dozen instances of outdated and derogatory terminology describing
intellectual disability from federal law...The bill would insert the phrase
?intellectual disability? to replace nearly 30 instances in statute where
?mentally retarded? is currently used.

Dear colleagues,
The Lgpolicy archives
<https://listserv.linguistlist.org/pipermail/lgpolicy-list/> at Linguist
List are working again. I thought it would be fitting for the first
substantive archived post on the updated version of Lgpolicy to recognize
Hal Schiffman (1938-2022), the list founder who managed it for over 20
years. Below is a bibliography of his works compiled by UMBC TESOL alumna
Sara Clement.
Best,
Francis
